CSANZ WA Meeting – July 2023

The CSANZ WA was pleased to host a pre-ASM meeting on Tuesday July 25 at the UWA club.  The event was organised by Abdul Ihdayhid, Girish Dwivedi and Jamie Rankin to provide an opportunity for our junior colleagues to practice their presentations, including questions from senior colleagues, before the big event.  This year we are pleased to report a record number of prize contenders from WA.  The evening was generously sponsored by Astra Zeneca, Amgen and Biotronik.

Why is the PR interval prolonged for some of the sinus beats?
The Answer: 
What does this Holter demonstrate?
  1. Interpolated PVCs – these are ventricular ectopics that occur between two sinus beats without a pause.

  2. A phenomenon called concealed conduction where the PVCs penetrate retrogradely to the AV node – it is concealed because the only evidence that this has occurred is ‘indirect’ – ie. PR interval prolongation in the subsequent sinus beats (*).

CSANZ Postgraduate Research Scholarships

The CSANZ Postgraduate Research Scholarships are intended to provide support for CSANZ Members who wish to pursue a career in cardiovascular research.

Awarded only to those whose research is to be conducted in Australia or New Zealand.  The value of the Scholarship will be equivalent to that of the NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship (depending on the successful candidate’s academic qualifications).

The Australian Cardiovascular Risk Guidelines were launched in Canberra on Thursday, 20 July.  Health stakeholders gathered as the Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care, (centre) launched the country’s new Guideline and calculator for assessing and managing cardiovascular disease risk.  Also pictured (left) is Prof Garry Jennings, Chief Medical Advisor, National Heart Foundation of Australia.

Call for Expressions of Interest – Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand is collaborating with CSANZ to develop a Joint Position Statement on the Diagnosis and Management of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH).

The purpose of the Position Statement is to provide concise, practical and evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of PAH. The Position Statement will provide a framework to ensure a consistent standard of care for patients with PAH.

CSANZ is inviting expressions of interest from members to join the Writing Group.  The group will comprise a  diverse representation including geographical spread, gender, discipline, and experience.
